In a significant drug bust, U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officials announced the discovery of cocaine worth an estimated $3 million concealed within a shipment of limes at the Otay Mesa border crossing. The seizure unfolded on Thursday morning when CBP officers encountered a 42-year-old man driving a commercial tractor-trailer purportedly transporting Persian limes. Despite the seemingly innocuous nature of the shipment, officers, exercising vigilance, referred the driver and the cargo for further examination. Utilizing a CBP K-9 unit, officers conducted a secondary inspection, during which the trained canine alerted them to suspicious activity within the trailer, prompting a thorough investigation.
Upon closer scrutiny, CBP officers unearthed 158 packages concealed within the shipment, raising immediate red flags. Subsequent testing confirmed the contents of the packages to be cocaine, with a staggering total weight of 435 pounds. The street value of the seized narcotics was estimated to be a substantial $3,355,800, underscoring the magnitude of the illicit operation intercepted by CBP officials.
