Thousands of Argentines gathered this Thursday in Buenos Aires (capital) to give their “goodbye” to the historic president of the Mothers of Plaza de Mayo, Hebe de Bonafini, who passed away on Sunday, November 20.
Mothers of Plaza de Mayo will dedicate a special tribute to Hebe de Bonafini
Banners with slogans such as “Eternal Hebe”, “Hebe never betrayed”, “Love is paid with love”, “She was indeed eternal fire”, “The people cry for you”, “Her legacy is the tenderness that screams”, adorned The May square.
In that same place, 45 years ago several women, including Hebe, began a fight against the repressors of the dictatorship and to recover their disappeared children.
On this day, at 3:00 p.m. (local time), together with round 2,329 of the Mothers, the ceremony of depositing the remains of the organization’s president in the Plaza de Mayo Pyramid also began. It is the first time that Bonafini was not in one of the usual demonstrations.
Loyola Visitation, 98 years old; Josefa de Fiore, 91, and Carmen Arias, 81, were some of the mothers who accompanied the remains of the social fighter to her resting place.
After this, the crowd present broke the silence with applause, hugs and tears, in honor of a woman who spent most of her life fighting against injustice and oblivion.
Hebe de Bonafini passed away on November 20 at the age of 93, leaving a legacy of struggle and resistance that, along with other mothers like her, turned the Mothers of the Plaza de Mayo and their white scarves into one of the most important symbols of justice and historical memory of the world.
