The Institute of Studies for Development and Peace (Indepaz) denounced this Monday the assassination of another social leader in Colombia, this time the unfortunate incident occurred in Arauquita, located in the department of Arauca.
21 years after the paramilitary massacre in Chengue, Colombia
Indepaz details that the victim responded to the name of Miguel Carrillo and was part of the Arauquita teaching school, “he was murdered in the morning hours in the La Libertad neighborhood (…) armed men intercepted him when he was traveling on a motorcycle with his wife,” they explain.
The Ombudsman’s Office had issued an alert for the municipalities of Fortul, Saravena, Tame and Arauquita, due to the constant threats that irregular armed groups issue against social leaders.
It should be remembered that in recent days the residents of the department have been victims of intimidation and armed confrontations, for which the numbers of forced displacement and systematic murders have skyrocketed.
According to Indepaz, in just 17 days of this year, three social leaders have been assassinated in Colombia and six massacres have been perpetrated.
