The Barquero-Zandron couple qualifies for the final in their first Games

Laura Barquero and Marco Zandron, who make up the first Spanish figure skating couple to participate in the Olympic Games, qualified for this Saturday’s final after achieving a score of 63.34 in the short program, which gave them eleventh place among the 16 best with the right to present the long program.

The Madrilenian and the Spanish nationalized Italian had a remarkable performance, which included a triple twist, a triple salchow in parallel and a thrown triple flip, with the music of ‘Dawn of Faith’.

They have been skating together since August 2020 and are also a couple off the ice.

His qualification for the final, together with the Olympic diploma achieved by Olivia Smart and Adrià Díaz in dance, represents a success for Spanish figure skating in Beijing, four years after Javier Fernández won bronze in the men’s competition.

Evgenia Tarasova and Vladimir Morozov are second with 84.25, world champions Anastasia Mishina and Aleksandr Galliamov are third with 82.76 and Alexandra Boikiva and Dmitrii Kozlovskii are fourth with 78.59.
