Serena Williams receives invitation to Wimbledon… will return to the courts in Eastbourne

Williams, 40, has not played on Tour since losing in the first round at Wimbledon last year due to injury, but the All England Lawn Tennis Club (AELTC) announced that she is one of six women to receive an invite.

Before competing at Wimbledon, Williams will pair with Tunisian tennis player Ons Jabeur, world number four, for the women’s doubles event at Eastbourne, which starts this weekend.

The UK Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) confirmed that the 23-time Grand Slam champion and Jabeur they are in the doubles draw at Eastbourne, which starts on Saturday. However, they are not likely to play their first game before Tuesday.

“I am excited to return to the Rothesay International tournament in England and be back on the pitch, a surface that has been very good to me throughout my careerWilliams said in a statement.

“Eastbourne has a unique charm not seen anywhere else on the Tour and I really want to play again in front of the fans“.

The American, now ranked 1,208th in the world, has won Wimbledon seven times in her career. Wimbledon begins on June 27.
