The President of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro, held a meeting on Tuesday with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Colombia, Álvaro Leyva, within the framework of the bilateral cooperation agenda.

Through his account on the social network Twitter, the president stressed that "as sister nations, Venezuela and Colombia continue to advance in cooperation for the well-being of our peoples. Grateful to the Foreign Minister of the Republic of Colombia, Álvaro Leyva Durán, for his valuable willingness to meet and understand".

The meeting was held at the Miraflores Palace (seat of the Government) in Caracas, after Leyva arrived in the country hours before to fulfill a work agenda.

The Colombian foreign minister was received by his counterpart Carlos Faría at the Simón Bolívar International Airport in Maiquetía. The Venezuelan diplomat stated that, together with Leyva, "we continue to work to advance the agenda designed by our presidents Nicolás Maduro and Gustavo Petro."

With the arrival to the Presidency of Colombia of President Gustavo Petro, relations between the two countries were restored in various areas, including the appointment of ambassadors in Bogotá and Caracas, as well as the reopening of the border on September 26.

Dialogue between the Government of Colombia and the ELN

This visit occurs within the framework of the announcement of the resumption of peace talks between the Government of Colombia and the National Liberation Army (ELN), in which Venezuela is the guarantor country in the process along with Cuba and Norway.



In this regard, the Colombian president reiterated at the time that "from Caracas the peace talks are officially resumed between our government and the ELN, together with the guarantor countries of Venezuela, Cuba and Norway."

For its part, the Venezuelan government published a statement to express that it aspires to "consolidate this new effort between the parties, so that the people of Colombia overcome this long period of conflicts that would strengthen Latin America and the Caribbean as a zone of peace".



Representatives of the Colombian government and the ELN presented the points agreed upon on this day, including "reinstalling the talks table with their respective delegations."

"Retake the set of agreements and progress made since the signing of the Agenda on March 30, 2016", as well as "announce the reestablishment of the dialogue process after the first week of November 2022", refers to the joint statement signed .
