The Vatican office stated that “accepting the invitation of the civil and ecclesial authorities and of the indigenous communities, the Holy Father Francis will make an Apostolic Journey to Canada from July 24 to 30, visiting the cities of Edmonton, Quebec and Iqaluit.”

Despite having postponed his trip to Lebanon planned for June as a result of health problems and severe knee pain, Pope Francis confirmed his tour of the Canadian nation.

Local media reported that in April the Supreme Pontiff had declared that he asked God for forgiveness and “I join my brother Canadian bishops in apologizing”; during a hearing in the Vatican before the delegations of the Métis, Inuit and original peoples of Canada, for the violence exerted for decades against these populations in Catholic boarding schools.

“I have received, with great sadness in my heart, the stories of suffering, deprivation, discriminatory treatment and various forms of abuse suffered by several of you, especially in boarding schools”, Pope Francis had declared.

For his part, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said that “while His Holiness apologized in Rome last month; A formal in-person apology in Canada from the Catholic Church to survivors and their families responds to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s call. It is an important and necessary step (…) to promote true reconciliation.”
