(CNN Spanish) — The Royal Spanish Football Federation announced this Thursday that Luis Enrique ceased to be the coach of the Spain team after the elimination in the round of 16 of the World Cup in Qatar at the hands of Morocco.
“The sports management of the RFEF has transferred to the president a report in which it is determined that a new project should start for the Spanish Soccer Team, with the aim of continuing with the growth achieved in recent years thanks to the work carried out by Luis Enrique and his collaborators,” says the statement published this Thursday on the federation’s social networks.
“The RFEF wants to thank the work of Luis Enrique and his entire coaching staff at the head of the absolute national team over the last few years,” he adds.

In its note, the federation highlights that the now former coach of the selected team “managed to give new impetus to the national team since his arrival, in 2018, through a profound renovation that has consolidated a generational change in the team and in Spanish football.” .
“Luis Enrique qualified for two Final Four of the UEFA Nations League, of the three he played as coach; and he reached the semifinals of Euro 2020 with his own stamp and through a defined style. He opted for young talent and has sown with hope for the future of the Spanish team”, he added.
However, despite these achievements, the authorities decided to put an end to Luis Enrique’s cycle.
Spain had a performance from highest to lowest in the World Cup in Qatar. After the historic win in their debut 7-0 against Costa Rica, they drew 1-1 against Germany after winning and lost surprisingly at the close of Group E against Japan 1-2, leaving them in second place.
In the round of 16 match played on Tuesday, La Roja had complete control of the ball during the 120 minutes of play, but could not break the iron resistance of the Africans. In the penalty shootout, the Spanish performance was disastrous: they were unable to score any of the three shots they took and fell 3-0.
Luis Enrique’s numbers with Spain
Luis Enrique returned to the national team at the end of 2019 after leaving the position of technical director months ago for personal reasons. His first stage at the head of the national team had begun in 2018.
Spain qualified directly for Qatar 2022 after winning their European qualifying group with 19 points in 8 games played (6 wins, 1 draw and 1 loss).
In addition to qualifying for the World Cup, Luis Enrique’s greatest achievement as head of the team has been reaching the final of the UEFA Nations League in 2021, an official tournament played by the best teams in Europe.
The Spanish team faced France for the title, after beating Italy, current Eurocup champion, in the semifinals. In the end the victory was for the Gauls, with a score of 2-1.
As coach of the national team, Luis Enrique directed 44 games in total in his two stages, with 24 wins, 11 draws and 9 losses, according to Transfermarkt figures.
