Liga MX and MLS present the new Leagues Cup | Video

The MX League and the mls announced this Thursday the new format of the League Cup. Now, all the teams from both leagues will fight for the official tournament of CONCACAF.

As of 2023, the mls and the MX League they will pause each summer and the 47 clubs from both leagues will compete in a World Cup-style tournament and format.

The event will be comprised of 77 matches Y will be played in its entirety United States and Canada. The 2023 edition It will take place between Friday, July 21 and Saturday, August 19, that is, between the Clausura and Apertura tournaments in the case of Mexican soccer.

The contest will start with a G phasegroups; nevertheless, one team from MLS and one from LIGA MX will enter directly into the Round of 16.

The MLS team that will get their direct ticket to the elimination round will be the winner of the League. Meanwhile, the direct classification of the Mexican club will be defined between Closing and Opening Tournament Championbased on the most points they have accumulated in both tournaments.

The 45 clubs remaining will be divided into 15 groups with three clubs each. Each team will play two games in the group stage and from each group two teams will qualify for the elimination round.

During the group stage, in the event that a match ends in a draw, a penalty shootout to award an additional point. Regulation victories will award three points.

After the group stage, the 30 clubs who qualify, together with the two who qualify directly, will be placed in a fixed bracket that will start at the Round of 16.

the champion of the League Cup will qualify directly to the CONCACAF Champions League Round of 16, and the clubs that finish in second and third place will qualify for the First Round of said tournament. This is the first official competition in the world to involve two leagues and be endorsed by their Confederation.
