Hispanic man breaks into home and is fatally shot

Fairfax, Virginia police detectives continue this week to investigate a fatal shooting believed to have been self-defense.

The event happened on the night of Wednesday the 9th in the 11400 block of Waples Mill Road, Oakton, when the police received an alert call for a shooting. Officers found 24-year-old Eduardo Santos of Herndon inside the home suffering from gunshot wounds to the upper body.

Rescue measures were attempted, but Santos was pronounced dead by fire and rescue personnel. Detectives determined that the owner saw Santos on his property, but the man assaulted the homeowner with a stick, according to the police report. Santos went several feet into the house before the owner shot him. The owner was taken to the hospital to be treated for his injuries.

Inside the home were two other adults and two children, but no one else was hurt. Detectives do not believe there is a relationship between Santos and the occupants of the home.

Officers had received two previous calls for service involving Santos acting suspiciously nearby. On one occasion, officers found him, but no wrongdoing was established.

Relatives of Eduardo Luis Santos consider that his death was a murder. In a GoFundMe account, shared by an aunt of the young Hispanic in order to cover funeral expenses, he points out that Santos “suffered from mental health problems and had run away from his house the day he died.”
