Hackers access American Airlines customer data

American Airlines disclosed that the personal information of a “very small number” of customers and employees was compromised after hackers compromised some workers’ email accounts.

The airline added that it has no indication that the intruders have abused that information.

Fort Worth, Texas-based American said the security breach was discovered in July and declined to say how many people had their personal information exposed or the nature of that data.

“American Airlines is aware of a phishing campaign that led to unauthorized access to a limited number of team member mailboxes,” American spokesman Curtis Blessing said. Phishing is tricking a user of electronic media into revealing passwords and other sensitive data.

“Those email accounts contained a very small amount of personal customer and employee information,” he said.

Blessing claimed that American is implementing “additional technical safeguards to prevent a similar incident from occurring in the future.”
