Francisco Miguel Callejas, champion of the US Chess Tournament

The youngest player in the tournament (13 years old), Alberto Gómez Aguirre, won the maximum title in the category of other users

On the afternoon of last Friday, April 1, at the Reading Room of the CDU Los Bermejaleswas held on Chess tournamentorganized by the Association of Friends for the Development of Chess, in collaboration with the Sports Activities Service of the Sevilla Universitywhich was disputed in two categories: University Community of the US and other users.

The competition took place at six rounds through the Swiss System and brought together nearly forty US students, lovers and experts of this sport. The student of the Francisco Miguel Callejas Rojas School of Medicine, who is federated and has played chess since he was 8 years old, has been proclaimed champion in the category of the University Community of the US, after beating their opponents in five rounds.

Regarding this achievement, Francisco Miguel was more than satisfied: “I was excited to win this tournament because I had never played it and you can only play in the years in which you are in the race. Also, if he won, he could compete in the Spanish University ChampionshipsSo I wanted to take advantage of that opportunity and I’m very happy.”

For its part, the youngest player in the tournament (13 years old), Alberto Gómez Aguirre, won the maximum title in the category of other users, after adding several consecutive victories. He is also federated, has gained experience in international competitions in New York, France and Portugal and attended this competition from Malaga in the company of his family. “I play chess for fun. I started doing it three years agoI kept improving and researching and little by little I have been gaining rating and, now, I am in a pretty good position,” he said.

Francis Michael and the student of the Mathematics Faculty Alberto Salas Campuzano, who was the second ranked studentcould be selected to represent the University of Seville in the Spanish University Chess Championships to be held in Malaga, from April 19 to 22.
