The Colombian baseball team defeated the Dominican Republic team on Thursday night by four runs to one, and was crowned champion of the 2022 Caribbean Series, to everyone’s surprise.
Colombia and the Dominican Republic advance to the final of the Caribbean Series
This is the first time in the history of the regional hot ball tournament that a Colombian team has won the title.
The Caimanes de Barranquilla from Colombia, who had accumulated 10 defeats in their two previous participations in the Caribbean Series, left the Gigantes del Cibao, from the Dominican Republic, with the desire to be crowned in the game played at the Quisqueya stadium, in Santo Sunday.
Pitcher Elkin Alcalá (1-0), who was on the mound for 5 2/3 innings, dominated the Dominican batters, while his teammates forged victory in the second inning with a three-run rally.
The Giants made what would be their only run in the sixth inning, however, the Caymans secured the historic victory in the last inning with what would be the fourth and final score.
The manager of the Colombian team, José Mosquera, declared at the end of the game: “I am very happy, I have no words to express what I am feeling right now”.
“All credit to my players who came to compete in every match. I think this should be a before and after in Colombian baseball. Today we made history and we must take advantage of this moment so that baseball in Colombia continues to grow”, he highlighted.
