The Geophysical Institute of Ecuador recorded the tremor at 00:24 local time and its epicenter was located less than 15 kilometers west of the city of Machala, capital of the coastal province of El Oro, on the border with Peru.
The earthquake originated 30 kilometers below ground level and was felt intensely in nearby Ecuadorian cities such as Guayaquil, where it caused alarm and some people evacuated buildings to go to the street due to the earthquake.
For its part, the Geophysical Institute of Peru (IGP) registered the tremor with a magnitude of 5.6 and with a depth of 58 kilometers that was felt strongly in the Peruvian town of Zarumilla, located on the border with Ecuador.
The Oceanographic and Antarctic Institute of the Ecuadorian Navy (Inocar) specified that the earthquake did not meet the conditions to generate a tsunami on the Ecuadorian coast.
Both Ecuador and Peru are located in the so-called Pacific Ring of Fire area, where 80 percent of the world's seismic activity is recorded.
