Yulimar Rojas and Messi are chosen as the best athletes in America in 2021 | News

The International Association of Sports Journalists (AIPS) of America recognized the Venezuelan tripler Yulimar Rojas and the Argentine soccer player Lionel Messi as the best athletes on the continent in this 2021.

AIPS said in a statement that Rojas, Olympic champion and world record holder in Tokyo with a record of 15.67 meters, reached eight votes to lead the Jamaican sprinter and also triple queen under five rings, Elaine Thompsom with six; and the Costa Rican professional boxer Yokasta Valle, owner of two.

The disciple of the once stellar Cuban long jumper, Iván Pedroso, in addition to being the winner of the Diamond League circuit, also set a record of 15.43 on the indoor track; and culminated among the finalists for the Best Female Athlete of 2021 award for World Athletics.



For his part, the Argentine star won his seventh Ballon d’Or, and led the Albiceleste to the title of the Copa América, in addition to becoming the leading scorer for the eighth time in the Spanish Football League.

These merits earned him an advantage in the votes of the specialized circle of the continent to the American swimmer Caleb Dressel, deserving of five tickets, and the Ecuadorian road cyclist Richard Carapaz, with three.

As part of the survey carried out, the Argentine men’s soccer squad were also winners, with seven votes as the best annual team, and ahead of the U23 baseball team of Venezuela, creditor of five.

It indicates in the document issued by AIPS that 21 countries from the Americas participated in this selection (Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Ecuador, El Salvador, United States, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Puerto Rico, Peru, Dominican Republic, Suriname, Uruguay and Venezuela).

Meanwhile, to choose the members of the candidacies in each category, the merits of each one of those proposed by the respective National Associations during 2021 were exclusively considered; and after a purifying process, the final vote was taken.
