As part of the celebrations for the Ocean Week at the Capitol and the world ocean dayThe National Wildlife Federation urged the Biden Administration to stick to its priorities and move quickly on the Ocean Climate Action Plan, released in March. The initiative is the first US plan to recognize and harness the ocean as a powerful source of climate solutions.
“Nature is sounding the alarm on the climate crisis, with more frequent weather disasters and increased heat affecting the health of our communities and habitats,” he said. Abby Tinsley, vice president of conservation policy for the National Wildlife Federation. “Our oceans and coastlines are one of the best tools we have to combat climate change and mitigate its worst impacts, including providing clean energy opportunities, increasing carbon dioxide storage, and creating more resilient coastal communities and habitats. We can harness the incredible power of the ocean as an ally in the fight against the climate crisis.”
The Biden Administration's Ocean Climate Action Plan harnesses the environmental potential of the oceans, enables people to work together with communities, and includes the need to:
- Designate marine protected areas and recognize the need to care for the people and places that are most affected by the impacts of climate change. This includes the remote islands of the Pacific, Papahānaumokuākea, Hudson Canyon, and the Chumash Heritage and Alaĝum Kanuux̂ Marine Sanctuaries.
- Expand opportunities for clean energy production through offshore wind power.
- Reduce harmful emissions and pollution that affect coastal communities and wildlife.
- Invest in adaptation and resilience.
