WMO: Europe experiences faster warming | News
The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) stressed this Monday that Europe is the continent that is experiencing the fastest warming, according to the annual report State of the Climate in Europe in 2022, published by the entity.

Likewise, the WMO indicated that the research "shows how Europe has been warming twice the global average since the 1980s, with far-reaching impacts on the region's socioeconomic fabric and ecosystems."
Announcing that in 2022 Europe was approximately 2.3 degrees Celsius above the pre-industrial average (1850-1900) used as a reference for the Paris Agreement on climate change, the WMO specified that this seriously affects people, economies and the environment in Europe.
On the other hand, the document confirms that the year 2022 was marked by extreme heat, drought and forest fires, while the temperature of the sea surface reached new highs throughout the Old Continent.
Another situation points to a record of marine heat waves, while the melting of glaciers reached unprecedented levels.
The organization highlighted that last year more electricity was generated with renewable sources than with natural gas; and wind and solar power produced 22.3 percent of the European Union's electricity.
"The report has a particular focus on energy and highlights how more extreme weather, including intense heat, heavy rainfall and drought, have increasing implications for supply, demand and the infrastructure of Europe's energy system," the WMO said.
