Japan condemns capture of cargo ship operated by Japanese company by Houthi rebels
The Japanese Government “decidedly” condemned this Monday the capture by Yemen's Houthi rebels in the Red Sea of a cargo ship operated by a company from its country and requested the release of the 25 sailors on the crew taken hostage in the incident.
Japanese government spokesman Hirokazu Matsuno assured that Tokyo is working with the relevant countries to guarantee the prompt release of the ship and its crew, 25 sailors of Bulgarian, Ukrainian, Filipino, Mexican and Romanian origin. The Houthis announced on Sunday the capture of the ship, which they claimed belongs to Israel, in "a military operation" that culminated in the diversion of the ship to an unspecified port controlled by the insurgents, who stated that these actions are only directed against Israeli vessels. .
The Galaxy Leader cargo ship, which carried vehicles, is owned by a British company, but is operated by the Japanese shipping company Nippon Yusen (NYK Line).
