Residents of coastal Virginia were bracing Sunday for the possibility of severe tidal flooding beginning Monday night.
The remnants of Hurricane Ian they moved out to sea and formed a northeasterly storm that is expected to pack even more water into an already flooded Chesapeake Bay, said Cody Poche, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service. That could lead to the most significant tidal flooding event in the Hampton Roads region in the last 10 to 15 years, Poche said.
The flooding is expected to cause extensive flooding of roads and buildings, "resulting in significant threat to property and life," a weather service coastal flood warning for the area said. The eastern seaboard and northern Outer Banks of North Carolina are also likely to be affected.
A handful of Virginia's coastal school districts canceled Monday classes on Sunday, and local officials urged residents to prepare.
The cities of Norfolk and Virginia Beach declared local states of emergency on Sunday, as did the island city of Chincoteague, which strongly recommended that residents in certain areas evacuate.
“We ask people to be very considerate and not take chances,” said Gov. Glenn Youngkin, noting that Virginia remains under a state of emergency declared last week.
