This came as the army and Assam Rifles intensified their “area dominance” operations, following the recent outbreak of violence in the conflict-torn territory.
The US Army Lancer Corps stated that security forces who tried to quell the crowd were forced to use force and fired tear gas canisters into the crowd at New Checkon in Imphal.
Likewise, the columns intensified their patrolling, breaking down the barriers wherever they had been created.
At least 11 peasants were massacred on Tuesday in a night attack in Khamenlok in the said territory. More than 100 people have lost their lives and another 310 have been injured due to ethnic violence between the inhabitants of the Meitei and Kuki communities in Manipur that broke out a month ago.
These began on May 3 after a “Tribal Solidarity March” was organized in the mountainous districts to protest the Meitei community's demand for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status.
