Why has violence returned to the conflict between Kosovo and Serbia? In the video that accompanies this news item, Ruth Ferrero, UCM Political Science professor and Public Agenda collaborator, and Mira Milosevich-Juaristi, principal investigator for the Balkans at the Elcano Royal Institute, analyze the return of protests in the region. The violent altercations have led NATO to make the decision to send 700 reinforcement soldiers to guarantee the safety of the citizens.

The deployment of additional forces is a "prudent step" to guarantee that KFOR - made up of some 3,800 troops - has "the forces and capabilities to fulfill its mandate" of peacekeeping received by the United Nations, as stressed by the secretary General of the organization, Jens Stoltenberg.

Over the past month, municipal elections organized by the Kosovar authorities have been boycotted by the main Kosovo Serb party. Some 50,000 Serbs living in the north of the region continue to refuse to participate in Kosovar institutions, such as the police, judiciary and municipal governments, which they abandoned last November. “The key to the conflict lies in the failure to comply with the so-called Brussels process, which was supposed to be an advance in relations between Serbia and Kosovo. It is the recognition of a wide autonomy of the Serb municipalities of northern Kosovo”, explains Milosevich-Juaristi in the video.
