La oficina de la fiscal general por el Estado de Nueva York, Leticia James, ha hecho público el vídeo grabado el pasado 10 de agosto, en el que el expresidente de Estados Unidos Donald Trump, citado para declarar en la causa abierta por posible fraude fiscal contra la organización que gestiona sus negocios, hace uso de su derecho constitucional (quinta enmienda) a no responder para evitar la autoincriminación. Trump explica en el vídeo por qué se ampara en ella: “Cuando tu familia, tu empresa y todas las personas de tu órbita se han convertido en el objetivo de una caza de brujas infundada y políticamente motivada, apoyada por abogados, fiscales y los medios de fake news, no tienes elección”.

El expresidente, como se puede ver en las imágenes que acompañan esta noticia, apunta que “nunca ha habido otro presidente, o quizás ni siquiera otro político, que haya sido perseguido, acosado y en todos los demás sentidos tratado injustamente como el presidente Donald J. Trump”. A cada pregunta que le hace la fiscal, el republicano se limita a contestar: “La misma respuesta”.

Esta grabación se ha hecho públicas unos meses después de que el magnate solicitara al Tribunal Supremo que sus declaraciones de impuestos se mantuvieran en secreto. Un comité parlamentario del Congreso norteamericano decidió a finales de diciembre de 2022 que sí se difundieran. Trump fue el primer presidente desde Gerald Ford que no publicó cada año su declaración de impuestos.

La fiscal general por el Estado de Nueva York sostiene que hay pruebas significativas de que la Organización Trump, que gestiona hoteles, campos de golf y otras propiedades inmobiliarias, dio a los bancos y a las autoridades fiscales información financiera engañosa para obtener beneficios.
