El volcán Etna ha vuelto a entrar en erupción este domingo en la isla de Sicilia, Italia, como puede verse en el vídeo que acompaña a esta noticia. La actividad ha obligado a cerrar temporalmente el cercano aeropuerto de Catania Vincenzo Bellini debido a las cenizas, menos de cuatro meses después desde el último incidente. En principio, se han cancelado todas las operaciones hasta las 20:00 horas del lunes, según la empresa que gestiona la infraestructura del terminal.
La clausura del aeropuerto coincide con un periodo de temporada alta de turismo. Las autoridades italianas piden a los pasajeros que consulten con su compañía aérea posibles cambios o desvíos, también en los vuelos de llegada a la ciudad italiana. Según Aena, para este lunes hay previstos ocho vuelos desde los aeropuertos españoles hacia Catania.
El Instituto Nacional de Geofísica y Vulcanología (INGV) de Italia ha informado en un comunicado en su página web que la erupción del volcán, uno de los más activos del mundo, “parece ser bastante modesta”. Las cenizas que se han dispersado en dirección sur de la ciudad y el desbordamiento de lava ha afectado al flanco suroeste de la montaña, pero ya está en proceso de enfriamiento.
