In a statement, the Bolivarian government expressed its "deepest regret for the tragic event that occurred in the border city of Brownsville (...) where the driver of a vehicle ran over a group of migrants, leaving the painful balance of at least 7 deaths and multiple injuries, some of Venezuelan nationality according to preliminary reports.”

Brownsville police announced that the perpetrator of the hit-and-run, who is in custody, is a Hispanic man. Some local media identified him as George Álvarez, of presumed Mexican nationality.
