US Senator Menéndez, charged with acting as a "foreign agent" of Egypt
New York, Oct 12 (EFE).- US Democratic Senator Bob Menéndez, accused by the Federal Prosecutor's Office of several corruption crimes in favor of the Egyptian Government, was indicted this Thursday by a grand jury on an additional charge for allegedly acting as a "foreign agent" for that country.
Authorities included the charge in a new charging document against the senator and his wife, Nadine Arslanian, who are accused of accepting thousands of dollars in bribes in exchange for using their political influence to "protect and enrich businessmen and benefit the Government." Of Egipt".
"Among other actions, Menéndez provided sensitive information from the US Government and took other steps that secretly helped the Government of Egypt," indicates the text of the accusation, published on the platform of the US Justice system.
The senator, who represents New Jersey, was initially accused by the Federal Prosecutor's Office on September 22 along with his wife and the businessmen who allegedly bribed Menéndez: Wael Hana, José Uribe and Fred Daibes, who remain charged in the new document. .
The politician pleaded not guilty last month, like the other defendants, and resigned as chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee, but for now maintains his seat despite calls from his party for him to resign.

In exchange, Menéndez would act, violating his duty, "for the benefit of the Government of Egypt", Hana and "others, including with respect to sales and financing of a military nature abroad," the authorities add.
The bribes that the Menéndezes allegedly received from at least 2018 to 2022 were: cash, gold, a mortgage payment, a job in which almost no presence was required for Nadine, and a Mercedes-Benz vehicle.
The trial was set for May 6, 2024. EFE
