US highlights progress and key meetings with China in APEC for a more peaceful region
San Francisco (USA), Nov 13 (EFECOM).- The US Secretary of the Treasury, Janet Yellen, stressed this Monday that the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Forum (APEC), of which the US. is hosting its 30th edition, it has brought progress towards a more "open, dynamic, resilient and peaceful" region.
"We have advanced our shared vision of making a more open, dynamic, resilient and peaceful Asia-Pacific region through financial commitments," Yellen said at a press conference after chairing the ministerial meetings held in San Francisco (USA). .) with their counterparts from the 21 participating economies.
The forum, which continues until Friday and will feature meetings of the foreign ministers and later the leaders' summit, has as its highlight the meeting between the head of the US Executive, Joe Biden, and that of China, Xi Jinping, the Wednesday.
A key event to stabilize the competition between the two most important powers in the world and try to prevent an open conflict in the face of its constant sources of tension.
"The responsible management of economic relations between the United States and China has also been a key priority during my stay in San Francisco (...) President Biden and I pursue a healthy and stable economic relationship with China," highlighted Yellen, who met with Chinese Finance Minister Lan Fo'an at APEC on Sunday.
The US representative - who also recently met with Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng - stressed that she hopes these meetings will serve to "deepen communication, stabilize the relationship and advance key political issues."
Likewise, Yellen reported that the high-level economic meetings at APEC, which began on Sunday and concluded today, had a sharing of global economic perspectives by the members in which the war between Israel and Hamas came up.
In that sense, although "the economic impact" of this conflict has not yet been seen, according to the US Treasury Secretary, APEC partners agreed to "work to do everything within their power to try to contain it."
The APEC economies represent almost 60% of the world's GDP and their economic meetings have been mainly oriented towards the implementation of policies committed to the environment in a commitment to sustainable finance.
"APEC members have confirmed their interest in applying policies that expand productive capacity and, at the same time, achieve results such as reducing inequality and protecting the environment," explained Yellen, who stressed the need to subscribe "credible climate commitments."
Finally, the use of digital assets - whether unbacked cryptoassets or digital currencies issued by central banks - was also discussed in these ministerial meetings, where the US praised "the leadership of many economies" and of APEC in this regard, but he emphasized the need for "adequate regulation because of the risks they entail."
APEC, a forum founded in 1989 that currently represents approximately 40% of the planet's population, brings together 21 territories in Asia and America bathed by the Pacific Ocean: Australia, Brunei, Canada, Chile, China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan , South Korea, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Philippines, Russia, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand, United States and Vietnam.
