Russia responded today to the United States that the "countermeasures" it announced this week for the Kremlin's decision to abandon START III or New START will not make it comply with said disarmament treaty, in the framework of the war in Ukraine.

"Regardless of any measure or countermeasure on the part of the United States, our decision to suspend START is immovable," Sergei Riabkov, Deputy Foreign Minister, said today, according to the Interfax agency.

He stressed that Moscow's condition for the full implementation of the treaty remains "the renunciation by the US of its fundamentally hostile policy towards Russia."

Riabkov admitted that the US decision to stop complying with START III did not come as a surprise to Moscow, as Washington had previously informed him. “Although it is true that they did it in what has been their usual way lately, setting conditions. In the style that you must do something, then there will be no such measures, ”he explained.
