US congressman's car stolen at gunpoint
A US congressman was robbed at gunpoint tonight in the Navy Yard neighborhood of Washington DC, approximately a mile from the US Capitol.
Democratic Representative Henry Cuellar of Texas was not injured in the assault. His office confirmed to CNN that three men, two of them with firearms, surrounded his car and stole it. The incident occurred around 9:30 p.m. local time. Police are still searching for the three suspects.
So far this year alone, violent crime in the United States capital has skyrocketed 38% compared to last year, with significant increases in robberies (63%) and sexual abuse (16%). Especially worrying are the 200 homicides that have occurred since January, an increase of 28%, since if this trend continues the record of the last two decades will be broken.
In fact, a recent report by Washington Post revealed that violent homicides, which grew in several cities in the country during the worst of the covid pandemic but later moderated in places like Chicago or New York, have continued to grow in the US capital. In September, Washington reinforced its nighttime curfew for minors with several patrols, in force since 1995 but which until now was not applied.
