The US government confirmed Friday that it will supply Ukraine with cluster bombs, the use of which is banned in much of the world.

According to the US National Security Adviser, Jake Sullivan, he stated that President Biden made the decision to send the cluster munitions on the "unanimous recommendation" of his administration.

Sullivan stressed that the delivery of the bombs is "critical" in the context of supporting Ukraine with weapons, at least while Washington increases its domestic production of artillery munitions.

The security adviser indicated that the official announcement on the shipment of cluster bombs will be made by the Pentagon.

When asked about the supply of cluster munitions to Ukraine, US President Joe Biden said it was a difficult decision and said he had discussed it with allied countries and Congress.

The US announced a new $800 million military aid package to Ukraine on Friday, rising to more than $41 billion since February 2022, which includes this type of munitions.

Cluster bombs date from World War II and can be used in rockets, missiles, and artillery shells. After being thrown, they open up in mid-air, spreading many mini-bombs over a wide area.

Depending on the type of weapon used, the number of submunitions ranges from a few dozen to over 600.

Many countries have banned its use and production under the 2008 Oslo Convention, to which the United States and Ukraine are not parties.
