Through a statement, US Ambassador Ken Salazar expressed that the safety of US citizens and employees is the highest priority for the Department of State, which is why he decided to close the US Consulate in the city of Nuevo Laredo in the border state of Tamaulipas.

The Mexican Foreign Ministry said that “it has been in direct and constant communication with the diplomatic representatives of the United States in our country.”

The clashes between gunmen from the Northeast Cartel and security forces broke out around midnight on Sunday and lasted until early Monday, after the arrest of the leader of that gang, identified as Juan Gerardo Treviño, alias Egg.

The Mexican Secretary of Defense reported that the criminal leader was arrested after his men opened fire on a military convoy in a Nuevo Laredo neighborhood.

At the time of his arrest, Treviño was carrying two firearms and has an extradition request from the United States for drug trafficking and money laundering, and arrest warrants in Mexico for homicide and terrorism, the secretariat said.

Residents of the town of Nuevo Laredo spread videos on social networks in which strong and prolonged bursts can be heard, in addition to showing some burned cars and trucks.
