Uruguay suspends broadcast of Russian channel RT | News

As part of the sanctions and policies against Russia, the National Telecommunications Administration (Antel) of Uruguay reported the suspension of the broadcast of the RT channel of the internet television platform Vera TV.

The president of the state-owned company Antel, Gabriel Gurméndez, valued RT as a channel “at the service of propaganda and justification for Russia’s violent military invasion of Ukraine, an action condemned by our country.”

The decision to suspend the transmission of RT in Uruguay is part of the policies and measures adopted by various countries, including the United States, the United Kingdom, and Germany, in response to the special military operation launched by the Russian president, Vladimir Putin, to guarantee peace. in Donetsk and Luhansk.

Similarly, other entities and representatives of European organizations spoke out against the Russian media. The president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, indicated that the European Union was “developing tools” to prevent RT and Sputnik emissions in the territory of the community.

The executive director of the Latin American Observatory for Media Regulation and Convergence (Observacom), Gustavo Gómez, expressed regarding Uruguay’s measure that “in an international conflict, all parties make propaganda and justify their actions. The position against one of them should not make you forget that it affects the right of Uruguayans to seek and receive information. That is state censorship.”

Similarly, the platforms and social networks of Mark Zuckerberg (Meta, Instagram and WhatsApp) restricted the publications of some Russian media such as RT and Sputnik. RT’s Instagram accounts were eventually blocked in a total of 27 European countries, the outlet reported.
