The UN offered this Tuesday (06.06.2023) help for the affected by the earthquake registered today in Haitiwhich is added to the floods and landslides that the Caribbean country had already been suffering and that had already claimed dozens of lives.
“The UN stands ready to work with the Haitian authorities and other partners to help reduce the suffering of those in need as a result of the earthquake,” said Stéphane Dujarric, the spokesman for United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres.
According to national authorities, at least three people died and several were injured due to the magnitude 4.9 earthquake that shook southwestern Haiti this morning.
However, the number of victims is likely to increase as, according to videos circulating on social networks, operations are being carried out to find people trapped under destroyed houses.
Floods leave 51 dead
"We are deeply saddened by the loss of life, destruction of property and the suffering of Haitians caused by the earthquake," said Dujarric, who recalled that this disaster adds to the tragedy of the floods seen in recent days.
According to him, the humanitarian services of the United Nations are working with other agencies of the organization to support the population around Port-au-Prince that has been greatly affected by the heavy rains.
Among other things, he explained, the World Food Program (WFP) has already distributed some 350,000 portions of hot food.
According to the latest data, floods and landslides have affected seven of Haiti's ten departments, leaving at least 51 dead and 140 injured.
