UN denounces that US weapons are smuggled into Haiti | News
The Office on Drugs and Crime of the United Nations Organization (Unodc) revealed this Friday that increasingly sophisticated weapons are being trafficked to Haiti and pointed to the United States (USA) as the main supplier.

According to the UN agency report, increasingly sophisticated and high-calibre firearms and ammunition are being trafficked, all while Haiti is in the midst of an unprecedented and rapidly deteriorating security situation.
In this sense, the UN warns that Haiti "continues to be a country of transshipment of drugs, mainly cocaine and cannabis, which mostly enter the country by boat or plane, arriving through public, private and informal ports, as well as runways clandestine".

It also denounces that "heavily armed criminal gangs are attacking ports, highways, critical infrastructure, customs, offices, police stations, courts, prisons, businesses and neighborhoods."
According to unpublished information and 45 interviews carried out by Unodc with representatives of the Haitian government, bilateral and multilateral agencies, experts in the field and Haitian civilians, "the situation in the country is rapidly deteriorating."
Most of the weapons come from the US and "reach gang members and private residents through intermediaries, often through public and private ports and porous checkpoints."
