Ukraine confirms evacuation of all civilians from Azovstal steelworks

“All civilians who were in the Azovstal steelworks in Mariupol have already been evacuated,” Ukraine’s deputy prime minister, Iryna Vereshchuk, announced.

“Today we managed to get 50 women, children and elderly people out of Azovstal. Tomorrow morning we will continue the evacuation operation,” Vereshchuk added via Telegram.

According to the Ukrainian deputy prime minister, the evacuation was complex and there were “constant violations” of the ceasefire by the Russian forces, who continue to fight in the steel mill against the Ukrainian troops.

The caravan to evacuate the refugees at the steel mill “was forced to stay near Azovstal all day” as there were “fights and other provocations”, Ukrainian authorities reported before announcing that evacuation operations would continue tomorrow.

The destination of the evacuees will be Zaporizhia, where the Ukrainian authorities have concentrated most of the civilians evacuated from the steelworks.
