The Regional Prosecutor’s Office in Kharkiv launched an investigation, after finding evidence regarding the torture that Ukrainian civilians have suffered at the hands of the Russian army in a “concentration camp” that they set up in a factory in Vovchansk.
Kharkiv, in the country’s northwest, was one of the first cities Russian troops seized when the invasion began in February. Oleh Syniehubov, Governor of the Kharkiv Regional Administrationwas the one who revealed that the Russian military looted the factories.
In addition, the Ukrainian official asserted that after taking everything from the factory, they established “a real concentration camp”, where civilians are subjected to torture to force them to collaborate with Russian forces, as reported by some media outlets.
“Russia continues to support the activities of the so-called filtration camps, including near Mariupol. Although the appropriate name is really concentration camps. Like those that the Nazis also built at the time,” Syniehubov said in his video-message, collected by the Ukrinform and Unian agencies.
According to information published by the agencies, the Russian army forced the population to march towards Russia or to join its troops: “They have turned it into a prison, to force people to cooperate and join the Russian forces,” Syniehubov said.
This is not the first time that it is claimed that there are “concentration camps” organized by the Russians, since in early April, after the Bucha massacre, Ukraine’s Prosecutor General’s Office said it had discovered a “torture chamber” in the area. It was apparently found in the basement of a children’s hospital in Bucha, and inside it they said they found the bodies of five men with their hands tied.
Own Ukrainian President Volodimir Zelensky said that Russian troops were committing torture and kidnapping in southern Ukraine: “Torture chambers are built there.”
