Ukraine attacks Russian Fleet barracks in Crimea

Ukraine launched a missile at the headquarters of the Russian Black Sea Fleet in Crimea. According to reports from military officials on both sides of the conflict, The attack left a soldier missing and the main building in flames.

In an initial statement, the Russian Defense Ministry mourned the death of a soldier allegedly in the attack. However, they later issued a revised statement, reporting that the soldier was missing in action after the impact in the port city of Sevastopol.

The Crimean peninsula, annexed by Russia in 2014, has been a constant focal point of tensions since Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered a full-scale invasion of Ukraine about 19 months ago.

Crimea has served as a strategic center for support of Moscow's invasion of Ukrainewith Sevastopol playing a crucial role in naval operations since the beginning of the conflict.

In recent weeks, Ukraine has increased its attacks on naval facilities in Crimea, while its summer counteroffensive gradually advances in the east and south of the country, according to the Institute for the Study of War.

Retaliation against Russia

This attack comes a day after Russia launched missile and artillery strikes on cities in Ukraine, claiming at least five lives.

The attack took place as Ukrainian President Volodimir Zelensky met in Washington with US President Joe Biden and congressional leaders to discuss un $24 billion aid package amid rising tensions in the region.
