This week there were two riots in prisons located in different cities of Ecuadorleaving a balance of at least 16 dead and more than 50 wounded.

The most recent riot occurred this Wednesday in a prison in the coastal city of Guayaquil, which left a balance of at least 11 prisoners and police officers injuredreported the SNAI prison authority in a preliminary report.

Violence has plagued Ecuador's prison system since early last year, resulting in hundreds of prisoners being killed.

From February 2021 to October 2022 there have been eight clashes in the prisons of Ecuador, which They have left 373 prisoners violently deadaccording to SNAI data.

The last deadly riot took place last Monday in the prison in the city of Latacunga, in which at least 16 prisoners died and more than 40 wounded.

The police remain within the limits of the prison called Penitenciaría, located in Guayaquil, “restoring order“, detailed the SNAI in a message posted on Twitter.

“The official report of institutions charged indicates that they resulted: 6 people deprived of liberty and 5 police officers“, he added, detailing that there was damage to the prison structure.

The entity not presented on deaths after the incidents.

The police reported that the uniformed they had been wounded with firearms as they intervened to restore order.

The Penitentiary was the scene of one of the worst prison riots in the history of Ecuador, which took place in September 2021 and left 122 dead prisoners.

The government attributes prison violence to infighting between gangs over territory and drug trafficking routes.

The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights indicated that the Ecuadorian prison system is affected by the abandonment of the State and the absence of a comprehensive policyas well as the poor conditions of the inmates.

The country's prisons house some 33,500 people and exceed their maximum capacity by 11.3%, according to official figures.
