A falta de ventanas, las paredes hablaban. El ex taxista togolés de 22 años, Mazou Suleyman era el más extrovertido de la docena de chicos de diferentes países subsaharianos que aguardaban la señal para iniciar el viaje más peligroso de sus vidas: cruzar el desierto desde la ciudad nigerina de Agadez hasta Libia y de allí atravesar el Mediterráneo y alcanzar Europa. Mazou y los demás llevaban semanas escondidos en una casa-gueto a las afueras de la ciudad nigerina, un edificio clandestino, de un solo piso y sin ventanas para evitar miradas indiscretas, donde esperaban la orden para iniciar un viaje de tres a cinco días junto a 48 adultos apelotonados en la parte trasera de una furgoneta. En las paredes de adobe del gueto, los migrantes habían escrito con carbón plegarias y deseos, pero encima la cabeza de Mazou sobresalía una frase que resumía el ánimo en aquella habitación: “Europa o nada”. Él se sacudía el miedo con matemáticas y razones. “Cuántos de los que intentan cruzar el mar no lo consiguen —preguntaba—, ¿un 5% se ahoga? ¿Un 3%? En mi país no ganaba para dar una vida digna a mi familia, allí no hay futuro. ¿Tú no te arriesgarías?”.
