Tornado in Alabama leaves at least one dead, several injured and houses destroyed

The dreaded tornadoes leave a trail of destruction in their wake.

One person was killed and eight others were injured after a tornado ripped through parts of Alabama. on Thursday, as a severe winter storm was moving through parts of west-central and southwestern Alabama.

Hale County Emergency Management Director Russell Weeden confirmed that three of the rescued people are in critical condition and five have minor injuries.

The tornado in Sawyerville, Hale County, also caused damage to other mobile homes and other homes in its path.

The tornado totally destroyed the mobile home where one of the victims was killed and three others had to be pulled from the rubble, and the mobile home was blown over County Road 30, Weede said.

Gwendolyn Inez Whitfield, 71, died after the tornado destroyed her mobile home and tossed her across the street in Sawyerville, according to Hale County Coroner Howard Paige. Whitfield was the only fatality from Thursday's tornadoes in Hale County, according to Al.com.

At least two tornadoes were confirmed in Alabama on Thursday.

The first confirmed tornado touched down around 2 p.m. Thursday near Sawyerville, in Hale County, according to the Birmingham office of the National Weather Service (NWS).

A second tornado was also confirmed near Duncanville in Tuscaloosa County, according to the NWS.

Also in Sawyerville, two trucks were dumped into a pond, according to radar analyst Bryan Wilson.

The Sawyerville tornado received a preliminary rating of EF2 from the NWS:

A tornado is a violently rotating column of air that extends from the base of a storm to the ground.

Tornadoes are capable of completely destroying well-built structures, uproot trees and launch objects through the air like deadly missiles and can happen at any time of the day or night and at any time of the year. Although tornadoes are most common in the Central Plains and the southeastern United States, they have been reported in all 50 states.
