Minutes later there was another of 4.8 at 12:22 and the last of 3.7 at 12:55. In total, three earthquakes shook that coastal area of the South American country in less than an hour.
The Geophysical Institute (IG) of the National Polytechnic School said that the epicenter of the tremor was 29.12 kilometers from Balao, Guayas.
Residents of GuayaquilLoja, Ambato, Zamora and Cuenca said the earthquake “was strong.”
In accordance with Trade, citizens reported the tremor was perceived in Pomasqui, La Vicentina, Carcelén and Nayón.
Users on social networks shared videos of the moment the earthquake surprised them.
According to messages on networks, in the Historic Center of the city of Guayaquil a wall collapsed as a result of the earthquake, crushing a person.
So far the president William Lasso has not been pronounced.
The provincial mayor of Zarumilla, Christian Aguayo, told the RPP radio station that this has been “The strongest tremor I have been able to witness in my entire life.”
In this regard, the National Emergency Operations Center (COEN) reported that first response units together with local authorities began review of vulnerable areas.
