In an unprecedented escalation of tensions, Israel finds itself in a state of war after a surprising attack carried out by the forces of the religious group Hamas, originating in the Gaza Strip. Unlike previous conflicts, experts argue that this Palestinian offensive is primarily driven by religious motivations rather than territorial claims, shedding light on a less explored facet of the world's conflicts.

Regarding this war, personalities from all over the world reacted and gave their opinions for and against the events. Colombia was not far behind. One of the first to react was President Gustavo Petro, who initially requested global dialogue to resolve this conflict peacefully.

For their part, Senator Paloma Valencia and Maria Fernanda Cabal expressed their support for Israel. For her part, Valencia published on the official X account, before her Twitter “Terrible situation in Israel. “All solidarity with the Jewish people today under the terrorism of Hamas”. On the other hand, Cabal shared a viral image on social networks that affirms its commitment and support for Israel with the text “I Am With Israel.”

This international dispute was not exempt from Colombian political extrapolations. The former advisor to former President Álvaro Uribe Vélez, José Obdulio Gaviria, threw a hint at President Gustavo Petro stating that: “'We are at war and we will win it,' says Israel and receives the unanimous support of the democracies. On the contrary, "Sociopaths on the left show solidarity with terrorists".

Another comment specifically directed with opinions against President Gustavo Petro was that of former senator Carlos Felipe Mejía, who mentioned that “... The vast majority of Colombians stand in solidarity with Israel and reject terrorism and violence”without first classifying Petro as a guerrilla and suggesting that he was supporting the terrorist group Hamas.

Finally, as expected, the Israeli ambassador in Colombia and the director of the Jewish community in Colombia stated its total rejection against the armed takeover by the terrorist group Hamas.

For his part, ambassador Gali Dagan published that “…the Hamas terrorist army infiltrated communities in southern Israel, shooting at families heading to Shabbat prayers, taking hostages and kidnapping Israeli citizens from their homes to Hamas-controlled Gaza.”.

The director of the Jewish community in Colombia, Marcos Peckel, threateningly stated: “Prepare for what is coming to you”.

The conflict began when Hamas launched rockets and allowed Palestinian militants to infiltrate Israeli territory. The immediate consequences were devastating, with at least three people dead and hundreds injured. Tel Aviv, like other cities in the country, is under constant alarm. The attacks have left 100 dead and more than 900 injured in Israel, while in Gaza 198 dead and more than 1,600 injured are reported.

Israel has blamed the Islamist group Hamas for this unprecedented attack. The Al Qasam Brigades, the armed wing of Hamas, have admitted to having launched more than 5,000 rockets from Gaza towards Israel and have announced that they have in their possession the bodies of dozens of Israeli soldiers who died in clashes on the border. This operation has been called “Al Aqsa Storm” by Mohamed Deif, commander of these brigades.

Faced with this critical situation, Israel has issued orders for civilians in the central and southern areas of the country to take refuge in safe places, while those living near Gaza must remain in their homes.

The Israeli Army General Staff is assessing the situation and has approved plans to continue military operations. Defense Minister Yoav Gallant has ordered the recruitment of reserve soldiers in response to the emergency.

Israel's response was immediate, and Israeli warplanes have bombed multiple Hamas facilities in the Gaza Strip at the beginning of Operation "Iron Swords" in retaliation for the surprising Hamas attack.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declared a state of war and has promised that the enemy “will pay a price like never before.” In a video posted on his social media, Netanyahu said: “Citizens of Israel, we are at war. “It is not an operation, it is not combat rounds, it is a war.”

This new conflict in the Middle East has left the world in suspense, and the implications of its religious rather than territorial motivations raise fundamental questions about the nature of the conflicts in the region and the possibility of reaching a lasting solution. The international community remains attentive to developments in the area as Israel and Hamas face off in an unprecedented conflict.
