The president of Nicaragua, Daniel Ortega, led this Tuesday the tribute to General Augusto César Sandino in an act to commemorate the 89th anniversary of his passage to immortality.

The president was present at the activity along with the vice president, Rosario Murillo, and other Nicaraguan authorities.

"Sandino comes from our ancestors, he comes from our roots. He is throughout Nicaragua, in the lakes, rivers, volcanoes, he is in the town and he is in the struggle of the Sandinista National Liberation Front," he said.

In addition, President Ortega stressed that the general "gave us the flag and we assume to retake the flag of Sandino.

"Dear general, here is your people, your youth, the women, all ready to continue fighting to defend peace," he emphasized.

On this day, various activities were carried out as part of the tribute to remember his legacy, including a relay race with flags at the general's monument on El Calvario street and ending at the General Sandino House Museum, in the municipality of Niquinohomo, Masaya department.
