The judges of the Northern Judicial Complex also announced that police lieutenant Alfonso Camacho was declared innocent for the crime of omission.
Lawyer Jesús López, representative of Belén Bernal’s mother, Elizabeth Otavalo, indicated that they could file an appeal against Camacho’s innocence decision, because there are doubts about his participation in the crime.
“We still have resources and we will determine with Mrs. Otavalo if we will request an appeal,” the lawyer told the press.
Cáceres confessed, during a hearing to expand his version, that he murdered his wife at the Police School in Quito, after having a discussion, which was recorded by the lawyer.
After leaving the body of Belén Bernal on a hill, the former police officer fled. He was detained in a town in Colombia and expelled to Quito at the beginning of January 2023.
For his part, Camacho was linked for the alleged crime of omission, because he would have been in the building where the murder occurred at dawn on September 11, 2022.
