They investigate the death of thousands of crabs and lobsters on the coast of England

A group of academics trying to clarify the causes that are killing thousands of crabs and lobsters on the northeast coast of England since October 2021, today published a report commissioned by the Government.

However, they failed to identify a concrete cause for this phenomenon.

Experts consider it "highly unlikely" that one of the causes is, as suggested, pyridine contamination, a substance used in dredging the mouth of the Tees River, with high industrial traffic.

Nor do they find conclusive evidence that a new pathogen or parasite is responsible for the phenomenon, although they emphasize that a "complete molecular study" has not yet been carried out and stress that this hypothesis "would explain the main observations" of crustacean mortality along 70 kilometers of coastline for nearly two years.

They rule out for now that the problem is due to a harmful algae oh loss of oxygen in the water.

The Teesside region is one of the so-called "free ports" that the British Executive has created to encourage the economy of impoverished industrial areas of the country with tax exemptions and reductions in commercial tariffs.

Fishermen in the area have claimed that their catches of crabs and lobsters have fallen between 80% and 95% in recent times.
