The Mayor’s Office issued a statement in which it deeply regretted the death of Castillo Ortiz, who also worked as a motorist.

The Fundepaz organization indicated that this is the first murder of a social leader in the department of Nariño so far in 2022.

The Institute of Studies for Development and Peace (Indepaz) mentioned for its part in a message on its Twitter account that “with Libardo Castillo Ortiz there would be 09 leaders and human rights defenders assassinated in 2022 and 1,295 since the signing of the agreement of peace (in 2016)”.

The non-governmental organization (NGO) mentioned that the leader was assassinated in the midst of events that are under investigation.

The Ombudsman’s Office has pointed out that in the municipalities of Barbacoas, Ricaurte and San Andrés de Tumaco, in the department of Nariño, the communities have resisted the violent practices of illegal armed actors.

“The demands of respect for their lives and their territory are seen by the armed groups as acts of rebellion, which is why they have undertaken various forms of violence against them,” Indepaz said.
