The visual spectacle of the Icelandic volcano attracts hundreds of tourists despite warnings
Iceland has been attracting a very specific type of tourism for years, willing to see an endless number of natural spectacles on an island such as geysers, waterfalls, natural hot water pools and, for a few years now, volcanoes. On July 11, the eruption of the Fagradalsjall volcano, 30 km from the capital Reykjavik, was declared for the third time in two years.
Despite warnings to stay away from the eruption, visitors flock to the Litli-Hrutur mountain to witness the lava explosions live. "I remember the first time I saw it, I couldn't get it into my head. I felt like I understood what I was seeing, but my brain was like 'what's going on?' It's pretty incredible when you first see it in the distance," says visitor Amishai Mueller.
The effusive eruptions that have occurred in this area so far have not been very dangerous, nor have they had any impact on air traffic.
