The US and Korea begin the largest live-fire military exercises in their history

The Armed Forces of the United States and South Korea have launched this Thursday what have already become their largest military maneuvers joint with live fire of its history.

Thus, the South Korean authorities indicated in a statement that the first phase, out of a total of five, has already begun and they have pointed out that these joint exercises are part of the 70th anniversary of the alliance between the two countries, as well as the 75th anniversary of the creation of the South Korean Armed Forces.

South Korea and USA are intended to test their "containment" capabilities against possible North Korean threats and aggression in the face of increased tension on the Korean peninsula.

The exercises are concentrated at the Seungjin Shooting Range in Pocheon, 52 kilometers northeast of seoulhas highlighted the Ministry of Defense of South Korea it's a statement. The military installations in question are only 30 kilometers from the Demilitarized Zone between the two Koreas.

These exercises include the use of F-35A stealth fighter jets, AH-64 Apache attack helicopters, K2 main battle tanks and 'Chunmoo' multiple missile launchers. The parties are scheduled to carry out similar exercises in June.

This type of exercises with live fire on a large scale they were held for the first time in June 1977 and since then they have taken place on a dozen occasions. The 2015 and 2017 maneuvers were personally supervised by the country's president.
