This Saturday marks the ninth anniversary of one of the deadliest attacks launched by Israel against Palestinian territories: Operation Protective Edge. It lasted until the end of August, and caused the death of several thousand civilians.

In the context of this commemoration, a chronology of the main armed aggressions of Israel against Palestine is proposed.

Water War (1963 - 1967)

It was a conflict originated by Israel's expansionist ambitions in search of water sources for its territories. In order to increase its access to the precious liquid, the Zionist regime began to divert the waters of the Jordan River towards its national aqueduct.

This action, illegal since the aquifer basin in question is located in free Palestinian territory, led to the carrying out of military actions by the Israeli Army to secure its claims.

It was a conflict widely denounced by the Arab and international community. It affected not only Palestine, but also other countries in the region, and had an impact on the occurrence of other armed conflicts.

Six Day War (1967)

Although this conflict officially pitted Israel against Egypt, Jordan, Iraq and Syria; The final result resulted in the illegal appropriation of Palestinian territories by the Zionist regime, evidencing its real ambitions for territorial expansion.

After the clashes, the Gaza Strip, the West Bank and East Jerusalem had been occupied by the Israeli Army. However, the international response ignored Palestinian interests in resolving the conflict.

The United Nations Organization (UN) adopted resolution 242 of 1967, in order to seek a negotiated solution to the hostilities. Said pronouncement made an absolute exit from the Palestinian conflict, leaving this community out of the game and its struggle diluted in the framework of the Arab-Israeli conflict.

The occupation of these territories by Israel, and its subsequent expansion, brought with it difficult social conditions for the Palestinians, systematic repression, refusal to recognize the right to self-determination and opposition to the construction of the Palestinian State, among others.

Operation Defensive Shield (2002)

It was a military action launched by Israel, with the aim of neutralizing the Palestinian resistance actions that were fighting against the Zionist occupation, known as the Second Intifada.

The aggression lasted from March 29 to May 3, 2002, and consisted of a ground and air offensive against Palestinian civilian positions, mainly the cities of Nablus and Jenin.

As a result of the clashes, several hundred Palestinian civilians lost their lives, while Israel fully occupied the West Bank, ending the de facto sovereignty of the Palestinian National Authority (PNA) in the region.

Operation Summer Rain (2006)

Due to the alleged kidnapping of an Israeli soldier by supporters of the Palestinian Hamas movement, the Zionist Army mobilized thousands of Air Force troops and launched them against civilian populations in the Gaza Strip.

Between June and November 2006, dozens of civilian targets were bombed in Gazi territory, namely bridges, power stations and homes. Part of the region was also occupied by Zionist forces.

Several hundred Palestinian civilians lost their lives, the population of the Gaza Strip suffering serious effects on basic services, and the worsening of the difficult conditions imposed by the Israeli occupation.

Operation Defensive Pillar (2011)

It was a series of air strikes by the Israeli Army on the Gaza Strip, in response to alleged Palestinian attacks on Israeli territory. The Palestinian authorities denied these attacks.

In just three days, Israeli aviation had completed 750 combat missions over Gaza, with more than 1,500 targets attacked, all according to official figures from the Zionist regime. Hundreds of Palestinian civilians died as a result of this aggression.

Operation Protective Edge (2014)

Reiterating the goal of ending alleged rocket attacks launched by the Palestinian side, Israeli forces launched this new offensive on Gaza between July and August 2014.

The aerial and artillery strikes occurred on civilian targets, which was denounced by the international community, given the lethality for Palestinian civilians, including children, who represented the attacks.

More than 2,000 Palestinian civilians were killed in this attack, while some 11,500 were injured, according to UN figures.

Netanyahu attacks (2021)

In May 2021, then-Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu ordered a series of attacks by the armed forces against the Gaza Strip, in one of the deadliest offensives since 2014.

According to the Palestinian Ministry of Health, the intense military attacks by Israeli forces against Gaza, which lasted from May 10 to 20, left at least 232 Palestinians dead, including 65 minors, 39 women and 17 elderly people.

Likewise, the health authorities indicated that since the beginning of the bombings, on May 10, 2021, the total number of injured people has risen to 1,900.

Similarly, Israeli shelling destroyed or seriously damaged some 450 buildings in the Gaza Strip, including six hospitals, nine primary health care centers and 40 schools.

Israel launches ferocious West Bank offensive, biggest military operation since 2002

Israeli military forces launched what authorities call their largest operation in the occupied West Bank city of Jenin in more than 20 years, killing 12 Palestinians and one Israeli soldier.

The occupied West Bank is experiencing its highest peak of violence since the Second Intifada and this 2023, 156 Palestinians have already died in the framework of the conflict.

The incursion into the Jenin countryside, a historic stronghold of the Palestinian militant movement, involved ground troops and air force for the first time in almost two decades, making it the largest in the occupied West Bank since the Second Intifada (2000-2005).

This new offensive was focused this time on dismantling the Jenin Brigade, which brings together the militias of all the factions united since last year, including Hamas and Islamic Jihad.
