The indisputable predominance of PEMEX in the production of hydrocarbons: a negative balance of the reform
Mexico.- During the Magisterial Conference of the Mexican Petroleum Congress 2023, Octavio Romero Oropeza, general director of Petróleos Mexicanos (PEMEX), expressed that, after nine years of implementation, the Energy Reform turned out to be a failure.
According to Romero Oropeza, PEMEX continues to be practically the only producer of hydrocarbons in the country, contributing 97% of the total.
During the period from January to May 2023, the average daily production of private companies in the energy sector reached 66 thousand barrels, representing barely 3% of national production.
This situation is replicated in the natural gas sector, where the State productive company achieved a production of more than 1,850,000 barrels, thus concentrating 97% of the hydrocarbons produced in Mexico.
"This means that the Energy Reform was a failure, PEMEX continues to be practically the only producer of hydrocarbons in this country," he stressed.
Romero Oropeza highlighted that the new fields developed during his administration have been fundamental in reversing the declining trend in production and fostering its growth. These fields require the drilling of wells that range between 7,000 and 8,000 meters deep, presenting considerable technical challenges.
However, thanks to the implementation of technology and operational excellence, drilling times have been optimized, setting records by reducing the days required from 180 to 124 in fields over 6,000 meters deep, and from 74 to 40. days in shallower fields.
These actions have generated benefits by lowering operating costs, bringing forward production and increasing physical activity in the same period, according to the general director of PEMEX. For this year, the company has the goals of drilling 97 exploratory wells and 256 production wells, with the objective of incorporating reserves of up to 904 million barrels and achieving an average daily production of 1,950,000 barrels during the year.
Romero Oropeza emphasized that this program represents a great challenge, since never in the history of PEMEX have so many wells been drilled with this technical complexity. In addition, he pointed out that, with the accelerated drilling of wells planned for this year, PEMEX's goal is to reach hydrocarbon production of 1,950,000 barrels per day, and by the end of 2024, reach 2 million barrels per day.
The manager highlighted the intensity with which they will work and stressed that the drilling of wells will be one of the main focuses this year, allocating significant resources to this task.
