The fifth peace signer is assassinated in Colombia during 2022 | News

The Institute of Studies for Development and Peace (Indepaz) denounced that this Monday the signer of the peace agreement Fabián Alexánder Rodríguez Suárez was assassinated, in the department of Putumayo, located in the southwest of Colombia.

Colombia adds 25 social leaders assassinated in 2022

In a message posted on its Twitter account, Indepaz indicated that the incident occurred on Monday morning in the Ranchería de Jardínes de Sucumbíos village, in the municipality of Valle del Guamuez, Putumayo.

Rodríguez Suárez was part of the Helier Mosquera de la Pradera Territorial Space for Training and Reincorporation (ETCR), located in the municipality of Puerto Asís, in Putumayo.

This is the fifth signer of the peace agreement killed so far in 2022 and there would already be 304 ex-combatants killed since the signing of the peace agreement in 2016, according to a count made by Indepaz.

These events occur despite the early warnings issued by the Ombudsman’s Office, where the risk of violence is documented, in the framework of the upcoming electoral processes in the South American country.

This Monday it was also reported that Guillermo Murcia, a candidate for one of the 16 peace constituencies to be elected on March 13, was kidnapped and later released.

Murcia, a well-known leader and survivor of an antipersonnel mine, was carrying out a campaign rally when he was detained by armed men in the rural area of Fortul, in the department of Arauca, located in eastern Colombia.

The mayor of that entity, Javier Cabrera, reported hours later on the release of the candidate to reach the House of Representatives through the special peace seat.
